Photoelastic Stress Analysis Systems

The GFP™1600 Photoelastic Stress Analysis (PSA) systems are some of the most flexible stress measurement instruments Stress Photonics offers. They are fully automated video-based systems capable of capturing full-field stress maps in seconds. The instruments use standard interchangeable camera lenses and an LED–based illuminator; they are managed via the DeltaVision™ control and analysis software.


The systems can be easily configured, and paired with a specific illuminator, to make any of the basic glass stress measurements, including for edge stress, area stress, thermal stress, assembly stress, and laminar stress. The GFP1600 systems are true general purpose tools.

GFP1600 System Configurations

Not only is the GFP™1600 one of the most flexible stress measurement instruments Stress Photonics offers, but when it is paired with specific illuminators and customizable framework, the resulting “configurations” become custom solutions suited to a broad range of applications. The most popular GFP1600 configurations are shown below.

GFP™1600 FPI

The GFP™1600 FPI (Flat Panel Illuminator) is ideal for large glass samples. Easily collect accurate and quantifiable stress data over an entire windshield, window, or other large piece of glass.

GFP™1600 TEST STAND

The GFP™1600 TEST STAND is designed to quickly measure stress in transparent samples, such as mobile phone glass, for engineering development or quality control.

GFP™1600 REFLECT

The GFP™1600 REFLECT measures stress in painted glass, such as automotive glass black frit, and determines surface strains on any material with an applied coating.

GFP™1600 DESK/MICRO

As the name implies, the GFP™1600 DESK/MICRO is ideal for measuring stress on small details such as flaws, edge grind, or contact points. Objectives of 2X, 5X, and 10X are available.

GFP1600 Sample Stress Image

The example on the right is a Shear 45 stress image of an automotive backlite showing the temper patterns. The stress image was acquired with a GFP™1600 FPI.

A GFP1600 FPI is essentially a standard GFP1600 paired with a Flat Panel Illuminator (FPI). The GFP1600 FPI allows for full-field stress images of large glass samples. Users can quickly and easily collect accurate and quantifiable stress data over an entire windshield, window, or other large piece of glass to solve problems in manufacturing, or to create a baseline of images for future reference.
